“To reduce overall inflammation, oral fish oil supplements also help strengthen the oily layer of natural tears, which prevents the eyes from both drying out from the outside world and having too much screen time.” says Dr. Melissa Toyos, General Ophthalmologist, Dry Eye Specialist and Cosmetic Facial Surgeon at Toyos Clinic. If you work on a computer every day or watch TV shows for hours, it may be a good idea to supplement your diet with omega-3s.
Omega-3 fatty acid supplements not only improve the lubrication of the eyes, but according to Dr. Taz, MD, and member of ETNT’s Medical Expert Panel, omega-3 fats are also helpful for reducing inflammation and “preventing the general aging of your eyes.” Fatty Acids 3 is a good place to start. Dr. Kulkarni recommends Happy Eyes because they are easy-to-chew mango-flavored gums that contain high-quality lutein and zeaxanthin. Both children and adults can take these supplements, making them suitable for the whole family. They are clinically proven to improve eyesight and aid macular pigment for long-term eye health.
According to the American Optometric Association, over 16 million Americans suffer from Dry Eye Disease (DED). Dr. Toyos recommends hyaluronic acid supplements when you want to add moisture back to dry eyes. This supplement also helps add moisture to the skin, which is definitely an added bonus.
